There is reason to suspect that William Ely had two wives, both named Elizabeth Smith. As documented in "Ely ancestry: lineage of Richard Ely of Plymouth" by Moses Beach, pg. 39-40. The burial details of the first Elizabeth are not known. Given the gap of approximately five years between the births of the third and fourth of William Ely's children as listed by Beach (of a total of ten children, some of which are not listed on findagrave) it is likely that the first wife named Elizabeth died sometime between 1683 and 1690
