Bio: He married Sarah Rosewell on June 8, 1703 in Norwich, Norfolk Co., Conn. He was residing in Norwich in 1699.
In 1669, John Woodward of Woodwardtown was one of a committee of representatives from each of the separate districts to decide where the meeting house was to be built (from "Historical discourse, East Haven, Conn., 1875, p. 22)

October 25, 1745. I John Woodward of New Haven… being weak in body but of perfect mind & memory… ordain this my last Will & Testament… I give to my Dear & Loving Wife Mary… all the plate, pewter, brass & iron & the clock with all and singular the household stuff or moveables in the house which came to me by marriage to her be they of what sort or kind soever and the ***** of my ****** and three Cows, and all the Bills & Notes for money due from any to me at East Haven or Middletown. And I appoint my Son Roswell to recover said Bills or Notes by Law if they can’t be got without, and also during the time of her remaining my Widow I give her the use of the east end of my now dwelling house & half the cellar under it, and the use of the new pasture with the apple trees thereon standing & being, and the use of the ***** and the use of my negro girl Abigail, and twenty pounds of sheep’s wool, and twenty pounds of flax yearly & twelve load of firewood yearly to be found her in equal ******* by my Sons Roswell & John, and I appoint my son John to make her three barrels of Cyder out of the new pasture, and he with his Brother Roswell to find three barrels to put the Cyder in & this in proportionable charge and place them in her cellar yearly. I appoint my son Roswell to keep up & maintain a good & lawful fence about said new pasture & **** and that he find her at all times an easy horse to ride to meeting on & elsewhere as she shall have occasion. And my will is that no debts or legacies shall be paid out of my Wife’s part, and that my son Roswell shall yearly provide winter fodder for the abovesaid three cows.

I give to my loving son Roswell besides what he has had already, all my interest in my negro boy Jack and also my negro girl Abigail when her service shall be ended as abovesaid, he paying to my loving Son Gaskel fifty pounds old tenor when he shall come of age, and also I give to my son Roswell all my stock of **** cattle, horses, sheep & swine not otherwise disposed of hereby, & I give him my desk, he paying to his brother John eight pounds money old tenor and I give him all my husbandry tools & tackling and my cane.

I give to my loving son John besides what he formerly has had, my negro man Francis, he paying to my daughter Elizabeth one hundred pounds old tenor, and also two cows and twenty sheep.

I give to my loving son Richard twenty five pounds old tenor besides what I formerly gave him.

I give to my loving son William considering the trade of a clothier and a farm(?) and divers other things which I formerly gave him I now give him a weavers loom and a pair of worsted combs and weavers tackling.

I give to my loving son Gaskill fifty pounds old tenor to be paid by my son Roswell when he shall be of age as abovesaid, also my Library(?) and my black mare colt & my silver tobacco box.

I give to my loving daughter Sarah Miles besides what I formerly gave her fifty pounds money old tenor and a quarter part of my household stuff, and two cows, and I now quit a bond with the interest of eighty pounds money old tenor given to me by my son Samuel Miles it being mislaid and not be found at present and I hereby desire my Executor to cancel the same when it shall come to hand.

I give to my loving daughter Lydia Davenport, besides what she formerly has had fifty pounds money old tenor and a quarter part of my household stuff, also two cows and ten sheep.

I give to my loving daughter Mary Trowbridge besides what she has formerly had sixty pounds money old tenor with one quarter part of my household stuff and two cows.

I give to my loving daughter Elizabeth one hundred & fifty pounds money old tenor, I appoint my abovesaid son John to pay her one hundred pounds of it as mentioned above and one quarter part of my household stuff and my gilded trunk with all the things in it, and a feather bed & bolster bed clothers, two pillows and a bed stead, also my silver tankard, two cows and ten sheep…”
