Bio: C.M. Holbrook was a Boot and Shoe Manufacturer in Hartford, Connecticut.

Born in Milford, Massachusetts he moved to Hartford at the age of twenty two and from there moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1849 he went to the Pacific slope due to the gold excitement and from then on wore a heavy gold ring which was made from the first gold found by him in the mines of California. The voyage was made by way of Cape Horn. In passing the latter a gale was encountered that lasted thirteen days, sweeping the vessel (the Henry Lee) 400 miles out of its course. The trip from New York to San Francisco lasted 270 days. From the Golden Gate to Sacramento the trip was made in an open boat. Mr. Holbrook spent fourteen months in the mines. In all he was absent for about three years on this journey.

Beginning in 1852 he became engaged in the leather business, mainly the manufacture of boots and shoes. The original firm was Hunt & Holbrook. Subsequently it became Hunt, Holbrook & Barber until the death of Mr. Barber in 1879, at which time it returned to its original name.

Caleb Holbrook married Anne E. Nelson and they resided at 340 Farmington Avenue in Hartford.
